Get ready for Level 1

An API Ninjas key, a Kitchen space in Jira and one dish ticket. Everything Level 1 needs on top of the general setup.

About 10 min3 steps

Level 1 builds a recipe card: a panel on every Jira work item that reads the dish named in the summary and shows that dish’s recipe. The recipe comes from an outside service, so you need an account there, and you need a place in Jira for dish tickets.

Did the general setup first? Node.js, the Forge CLI, forge login and a developer site are all assumed from here on.

Step 1: Get an API Ninjas key

The recipes come from API Ninjas (opens in a new tab), a service with many small public APIs. Its recipe API takes a dish name and answers with ingredients, servings and a method.

  1. Create a free account at api-ninjas.com (opens in a new tab).
  2. Open your account page and copy your API key.
  3. Keep it somewhere private, such as a password manager. Lesson 3 puts it in the app’s safe.

Never paste the key into code, a chat or a screenshot. Anyone with it can spend your quota.

Stuck? The card says “The supplier answered 401” (or 403)

Step 2: Create a Kitchen space in Jira

Open Jira on your developer site and create a space for the course. Jira calls them spaces; older screens may still say projects.

  1. Choose Create space (or Create project).
  2. Pick any software template, such as Kanban.
  3. Name it Kitchen and set the key to KIT.

Level 2 adds to this same space, so keep it.

Stuck? `forge site provision` is not available or fails

Step 3: Put up the first dish ticket

Jira work item · a dish ticket

A work item is one piece of work in Jira, with a key such as KIT-1, a summary, a status and fields. In this course every work item names one dish, and the app treats its summary as the dish to look up.

In the kitchen A ticket on the board for one dish.

Create a work item in the Kitchen space with the summary Pad thai. Leave everything else as it is.

This ticket is the one the recipe card reads when it is finished. Until lesson 6, the card always looks up Pad thai, whatever the summary says.

Type at least two letters.
