Level 2 · Lesson 6
Hire the specialist chef
Level 2 · Lesson 6Add a Rovo agent to the app with two actions, one that researches a dish with the Level 1 supplier and one that publishes notes, both as the person chatting.
Behind, or starting here? Download the code as it should be before this lesson.
The handed-off dishes need someone to research them. This lesson adds an AI agent to Rovo that belongs to your app: it can use your supplier, with your key, and nothing else you have not given it.
In Rovo Chat, the agent decides to call an action.
In the kitchen: The specialist picks a technique.

Rovo agent The specialist chef
An AI agent your app adds to Rovo, with a prompt and a list of actions it may call.
A specialist with their own station, who only does the techniques you trained them for.

Rovo action · a technique
An action module is a function a Rovo agent may decide to call, with named, typed inputs and a verb such as GET or CREATE. The agent fills the inputs from the conversation, so the function must check them like any other input. Actions run as the person chatting, so asUser() keeps the agent to what they may see and do.
In the kitchen One technique the specialist knows, with a clear list of what it needs.
A new file holds both functions. researchDish reads the ticket as the person chatting and asks the same supplier module the recipe card uses. publishNotes writes a Confluence page, links it from the ticket, and remembers it, so it publishes once per ticket.
src/rovo.jsA new file: research on the user’s badge with the Level 1 supplier, and publish once per ticket.

Why: Rovo action · asUser() · External API
Everything an action returns goes back into the model’s context. The research returns plain data and errors in plain words; it never returns text that could read as an instruction.

Rovo agent (rovo:agent) · the specialist chef
A rovo:agent module adds an agent to Rovo, defined in your manifest: its name, its description, a prompt, conversation starters and the actions it may call. It runs your functions with your app’s permissions and egress list, which is what makes it a specialist rather than a general assistant.
In the kitchen A specialist with their own station, who only does the techniques you trained them for.
Three additions: the agent, its two actions with their inputs, and the functions behind them.

The prompt tells the agent to research before it writes, to treat action results as data, and never to claim a page exists unless publish-notes says so.

Step 4: Ask the specialist about a dish
Locked until the step before it is done.
- Open Rovo Chat and choose Specialist chef from the agents. A new agent can take a few minutes to appear.
- Ask it to research the Tom yum soup ticket by its key, for example: “Research KIT-27”.
- It calls Research a dish and summarises the recipe, what to source and any risks.
- Ask it to publish the notes. It calls Publish dish notes; Rovo may ask you to confirm first, because the action creates something.
A page with the notes appears in the Menus space, and the ticket gets a comment linking to it. Ask it to publish again: the action answers that notes for this ticket already exist.
